Iloilo beats Mantawi, Traders fail to grab No.2 slot in Visayas
The MLSDF-Mantawi Traders lost their bid to become the No.2 team in the Visayas as they suffered another loss, this time at the hands of the Toyota-Iloilo Warriors, 67-64, in Pototan, Iloilo, even as Mindanao top-seed Iligan City is on the brink of elimination after losing Game 1 of the best-of-three Mindanao Division semifinal series to Montaña-Davao of the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association.
The Warriors snapped their five-game losing skid, avenging their 71-79 defeat to the Traders last April 17.
The Warriors drew strength from the sterling performance of guard Eduardo Allado and inside operator Francis Sanz, who were both activated after missing five straight games.
No defensive adjustments
Iloilo dominated the entire game as the Traders failed to make defensive adjustments while their offense went sour.
Allado topped Iloilo with 17 points, while Sanz added 12 for the Iloilo’s first win. Doroteo Almacin was the only Trader who scored in double digits with 10 points.
Meanwhile, fourth-seed Montaña Pawnshop-Davao Jewels shocked top-seed Iligan City, 87-69, using a wild second and third quarter runs to start their best-of-three Mindanao Division semifinal series on a high note at the MSU-IIT Gym in Iligan City.
The Jewels can wrap up the series tomorrow at the their home turf in Panabo City, Davao del Norte and gain a spot in the Mindanao Division Finals of the league supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, Panasonic, Molten and Sulpicio Lines.
If needed, Game 3 will be played on May 12 at the MSU-IIT Gym.
