Superflies Banal, Allanic KO Thais

Superflyweights AJ Banal and Robert Allanic stopped their respective Thai opponents in the card aptly dubbed “Stars of the Future” at the Island City Mall Car Park in Tagbilaran City last Sunday.

The youthful Banal scored a second-round knockout win over Bangsaen Sithpraprom, using a left straight that smacked right into the temple of his Thai opponent.

Bangsaen, whose previous loss was to Gerry Peñalosa in their WBF superflyweight encounter in Manila in 2004, failed to stand up as referee Teddy Alivio reached the 10-count at 2:15. Bangsaen stayed on his back for about 10 minutes.

“No wonder these are the next stars of the Philippines,” said WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leo Panoncillo Jr., who flew all the way from Hawaii, just to watch the next batch of boxing stars display their skills.

“That is why, Golden Boy Promotions is eager to sign him up for a promotional contract because he is good and talented. But he is only 17, so they need to wait for one or two years to sign this boy. No doubt, Banal will go places,” Panoncillo said.

Three knockouts

The victory improved Banal’s win-loss-draw record to 6-0-1, five wins by knockout. Bangsaen dropped to 5-2, 3KOs.

Allanic, on the other hand, was relentless, dominating Saensak Singmanassak. An uppercut to the body dropped the Thai, a former WBO ranked fighter, to the canvas in the sixth round.

Another barrage of punches to the body dropped Saensak for a second time in the sixth round before Allanic finished the fight in the seventh using a ring overhand to the head. Referee Alivio did not bother to count as he stopped the proceedings at 1:19 as the ALA Boy scored his 13th win and his sixth knockout victory, against a single loss. Saensak dropped to 11-14-2, 6KOs.

Southeast Asian Games silver-medalist Mark Jason Melliguen also proved he is a fighter to watch as he scored a TKO win in his pro debut over the erstwhile-undefeated Rolan Malunhao a few seconds after the opening bell. Malunhao had three victories, with two knockouts under his belt before facing Melliguen.

However, despite his edge in experience and weight, Malunhao was no match for the 20-year-old Melliguen, who left the Philippine Team to join the pro ranks.

Other winners include Rey Caitom over Roldan Malinao, Milan Milendo over Amirro Ricablanca, Frank Albia over Brix Ray and Rex Malibago over Daryl Amoncio by TKO in 1:19 of the first round.

While Lito Jalnaiz was lucky to get a majority draw over the aggressive Jessie Labarracin. Albarracin inflicted damage over the former RP boxing team member, and looked to have won all rounds but the third.

The Rogen Flores-Rey Taguibalos fight was also declared a technical draw at 2:35 of the second round after the Mandaue City based Flores suffered deep cut due to an accidental headbutt. (RCM)
