Speak out: We are still united
By Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino-Cebu

Despite our differences, the Bukluran ng Mangagawang Pilipino (BMP) and Kilusang Mayo Uno are united in a common struggle for the workers economic interest and the ouster of the Arroyo administration.

The incident that happened in Colon on Labor Day between KMU and us was just a petty squabble compared to what both our groups are fighting for.

We cannot let it weaken the militant struggle of the working class, neither can we let this issue be used and abused to discredit the progressive and militant labor organizations.

Thus, we were deeply saddened over how KMU and its allies mishandled the incident.

BMP-Cebu has never sough permit to rally. We asserted this practice even under President Arroyo’s calibrated preemptive response and Presidential Proclamation 1017.

We believe that freedom of assembly is an inalienable right guaranteed under the present constitution and we also believe that KMU and its allied organizations have the same view on this matter.

So how come one of their leaders, in a radio interview, called on the police to act against us over the permit issue and the use of the area in front of Gaisano Metro?

Also, we were disappointed that KMU rejected our offer to hold a joint program in Colon as a win-win solution to that rally site dispute.

Even then, we are positive that in the near future KMU, BMP and other militant labor organization will join hands not only in presenting issues but also in holding mobilizations.
