Davao dethrones QC lady booters
By Mike T. Limpag
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

Outgunned on all fronts, defending champion Queen City United lost its title to D’ Davao Survivors (DDS), 0-1, in the 6th Inter-Club Invitational Tournament Ladies’ Open finals at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center yesterday.

On the other hand, Mulbachs salvaged third place after defeating Ladies’ Football Club-CDO, 3-1.
In the Men’s Open, favorites Bacolod City and Don Bosco College will go for the title and the P45,000 top purse today after hurdling their semifinal matches yesterday.

Davao, which defeated Queen City, 5-0, in last year’s National Women’s Open, had QC keeper Carmel Openiano and her defenders scrambling from the start with their pin-point and crafty passes, orchestrated by national team member Rachelle delos Reys.

A goalmouth scramble in the fifth minute failed to net any goal, while Openiano staved off shots from delos Reyes and Roseton Bariñan, while Analou Ingles’ hit high.

Ellen Cuizon found another hole in the leaky QC defense, forcing Openiano to a save, while delos Reyes hit the bar in the 33rd and a minute later, her shot was caught by Openiano.

Lone goal

Queen City’s luck finally ran out in the seven minutes from time after Bariñan redirected Cuizon’s high cross for the lone goal of the match.

In the Men’s semifinal round, veteran Norman Fegidero scored two goals as Bacolod ousted defending champion Hiroshi FC, 4-0, while Dave Intong’s early goal saw DBC defeating Queen City, 1-0.
