Z, Rey do interviews, spar with champs in US

Although they started sluggish, ALA Gym’s Rey Bautista and Z Gorres are now on a rhythm as they train in the US for their upcoming fights.

The two boxers’ trainer, Edito Villamor, said their daily regimen starts with an early-morning jog and then followed by workout and sparring sessions at the gym.

In an e-mail sent to Sun.Star Cebu, Villamor said Bautista was had inrpoved and looked “impressive” when he sparred with WBA lightweight champion Juan Diaz for three rounds and Israel Vasquez, who dethroned Oscar Larios last December for the WBC super-bantamweight title.

He said Bautista was not as impressive when he battled the two champion boxers in previous days.

Gorres also had three-round sparring sessions with the two champions and gave them a good workout.

Villamor noted, though, that Gorres looked tired when he sparred with Diaz and Vasquez.

Bautista, the WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion, is scheduled to fight Nicaragua’s Roberto “El Chucky” Bonilla under WBC super-featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera’s title defense against Rocky Juarez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on May 20.

Gorres, the OPBF super-flyweight champion, will fight in the undercard of WBO bantamweight champion Johnny Gonzalez’s defense against Fernando Montiel on May 27 also in California.

Villamor said one of their favorite pastime after training is surfing the Internet for boxing news and updates, while the boxers also get interviews from sports reporters.

Bautista was recently interviewed by Brad Cooney of boxingtalk.com and a Latin sports TV show. (JCT)
