Costanilla: Huniño By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
Hilariou. Despite their age, Cebu’s Max Surban and Bohol’s Yoyoy Villame continue to reign supreme as kings of novelty songs. Their hilarious songs and spiels are distinctly their own. They could do a show even for three hours without boring the audience. The two novelty singers have a natural way of making the crowd laugh without forcing them to. They simply sing and talk in a manner that doesn’t require “hardsell” of their antics. Theirs is a surefire way of driving the blues away and making people laugh with much ease and confidence. Their jokes don’t fall flat. At any rate, it was a big honor and pride on this writer’s part to have emceed the Max-Yoyoy “showdown” during the Asean Fiesta in Mandaue at the mini-park at the foot of the Fernan bridge. The two novelty singers brought the house down with their “encounter.” Also during the program, singer-actress Manilyn Reynes wowed the spectators with her performance.
The petite actress-singer was able to prove that despite her semi-inactive status as an entertainer, she could still delight the people with her voice and very down-to-earth spiels. And despite her size now, Manilyn could still sway gracefully.

TILT. We commend the priests of the Basilica del Sto. Niño for coming up with a song writing tilt dedicated to the Holy Child.
The competition, aptly titled Huniño which means Huni Alang Kang Sto. Niño (Music for Santo Niño), is open to all amateur and professional songwriters with their entries either in Cebuano, English or Filipino or a combination of all three. Just like the annual Cebu Popular Music Festival, the Huniño song writing competition allows composers to submit as many entries as they want. However, in the Huniño tilt, only one song per composer will make it to the finals by determining which of his/her songs will get a higher ranking during the screening. All entries should be passed to the Basilica del Sto. Niño on or before September 3.

CONCERT. This Wednesday, May 10, all roads lead to Waterfront Hotel in Lahug this city for Faces of Love with Zsa Zsa Padilla and Gary Valenciano. The country’s top concert artists will be singing ourfavorite classic and contemporary selections in this event billed as the year’s most romantic musicalengagement. But what is so laudable with this concert is the fact that part of its proceeds will go to theResponsive Education for Autistic Children. I need not remind you about the presence of scalpers, but it’s always advisable to secure your concert tickets from Citickets by calling tel. nos. 412-4512 or 232-9888. *** ASSOCIATION. Then on June 3, we Cebuanos would be treated to another delightful musical treat, one that we should not miss. Ovation Productions and Tagged Events are joining hands in bringing to Cebu The Association whose music has become a global sensation. Remember such hits as Never My Love and Cherish? The Association popularized these and other familiar tunes. Yes, this is The Association’s first Cebu concert, so if you opt to miss their June 3 show, don’t blame me if after the concert some people would tell you that you shall have wasted a rare chance to enjoy a truly wonderful musical event. As early as now, the producers are already selling tickets. Call tel. nos. 232-6098 or 232-6888 for reservations. ***
GUEST. Tomorrow, Tuesday, from 8-9 p.m., over Cebu Catholic Television Network channel 47 or Skycable 56, I will have a very special guest singer on the program Sam Enchanted Evening. I will have the opportunity to accompany this guest on the piano. Catch us.

SICKLY. This aging radioman is so sickly that he can’t even walk for two minutes without panting. But despite his ailment, the guy continues to engage in a romantic relationship with a mistress. The staff of the radio station that he is serving have been complaining about the couple’s public display of affection for each other. Also, the aging and sickly broadcaster has just been disowned by his ownrelatives after he sold their house without the courtesy of informing them beforehand. His credibility? Zero.
