Cepca defeats Mepz in friendly
The Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) squad showcased its might following a masterful conquest of a team from Mepz 1 and 2 in the Cepca-Mepz 1 and 2 Goodwill Match Saturday.
Mer Fernandez, Mike Banibane, Maggie Dionson, Felix Balbona, Fabio Abucejo, Danny Madeja and Danny Pestaño won both their games as Cepca brushed off a so-so opening-round performance to dominate the Mepz chessers, 21-11, in the two-round, 16-board match at Fairchild Semiconductors in Lapu-Lapu City.
Round one
Fernandez went 2-of-2 against Jonathan Canque on board three, Banibane hurdled both his games against Totong Sapa on board six, Dionson swept Freddie Sasan on board nine, Balbona blanked Charliemagne Relos on board 10, Abucejo shut out Roger Pesole on board 13, Madeja tripped Jeffresy Solis on board 14 and Pestaña brought up the rear end by sweeping Abe Sanchez.
The seven perfect scorers were also the only winners for Cepca in the opening round, where the Mepz players held their ground, tying the count at eight points apiece.
Cepca president Manday Baria, who this time played for the host Mepz team, and Excel Canque – the only players from Mepz who won both their matches – led the host chessers’ gallant stand in the opening round after beating Fred Sandalo and Boy Pestaño, respectively.
Mepz winners
Other winners for Mepz in the opening match were William Retanal over Jobannie Tabada on board one, Matt Matuco over Jonard Labadan on board two, Eloeterio Godinez over Rene Casia on board five, Wendell Mandriquez over Joe Atillo on board 11 and Jade Garzon over Norway Lara on board 12.
Cepca’s Dante Arguelles and Mepz’s Romeo Resuera drew their match, while Cepca’s Jongjong Melendez and Mepz’s Bong San Pascual also halved the point.
The second round, however, was a different story with the Cepca squad flexing its muscle for 13-3 blowout with only Baria and Canque winning their games for the Mepz team.
The rest of the Mepz players, except for Matuco and San Pascual, who drew their matches with Labadan and San Pascual, respectively, got wiped out in the second round.
The match as sponsored by Timex Philippines, Fairchild, Aboitiz Land and Cepca.
