Toledo resets two records in win v. WNC
The Toledo-Cebu Landmasters were merciless on their way to crushing the hapless West Negros College-Talisay City Mustangs and setting up new records in the Visayas Division of the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) First Conference.
Toledo scored a 113-80 victory Saturday night over the host Mustangs at the Talisay City Gym. Toledo’s 113 points were the most scored by a team in a game in the MVBA, while the 33-point win is now the biggest winning margin in the league, erasing the 27-point win earlier set by the Mantawi Traders over the Mustangs.
Semifinals
More importantly, the win sealed Toledo’s claim of the No.2 spot with a 5-2 slate in the Visayas standings of the league supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, Molten, Panasonic and Sulpicio Lines.
The Mustangs fell to their fifth straight loss.
Guard Alex Cainglet started the scoring blitz by unloading 12 of his 22 points in the first period, pushing Toledo ahead, 30-24. Ronald Paraiso joined the scoring spree to push Toledo further ahead at halftime, 58-45.
Things further soured for the host Mustangs while the Landmasters were unrelenting in the second half behind the hot shooting of Cainglet, Paraiso, Richard Ian Saladaga, Leo Bat-og and Carlos Sayon.
Top scorers
Paraiso also had 22 points, while Saladaga added 17.
Vengie Vergara topped the Mustangs with 19 points, while the usually explosive Ely Olarte was held to only 15.
It would be a make-or-break game for the Mustangs as they shoot for their first win when they go up against the Toyota-Iloilo Warriors at home tomorrow.
The Warriors and the Mustangs are battling for the last semifinals berth in the Visayas Division after Cebu teams – the undefeated M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City, Toledo-Cebu Landmasters and Mantawi Traders – grabbed the first, second and third spots, respectively.
