NAGA CITY – Members of the chess, gymnastics and badminton teams of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) garnered golds yesterday amid the raging winds brought about by the fury of typhoon Caloy in the 2006 Palarong Pambansa at the Metro Naga Sports Complex (MNSC).

University of the Visayas (UV) bet Willan Bacalla netted the first gold for Region 7 yesterday as she topped the vault exercise in Secondary Girls Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics at the Ateneo de Naga University, which is five kilometers away from the MNSC.

Giving light on an otherwise bleak day for Region 7 as the full force of the typhoon hit the city were woodpushers in the Secondary division, who garnered the championship titles in their respective events.

Michael Joseph Pagaran doled out the gold to Cviraa after mastering the board one wars in the Secondary Boys division, while the tandem of Jedera Docena and Ma. Therese Letegio chipped in another gold after winning in the Secondary Girls team event.

Decena handled the board one for Region 7, while Letegio was in charge of the board two.

The last to dole out a gold for the region yesterday was the duo of Joe James Taboada and Noeh Layan, who topped their foes in the Elementary Boys badminton Doubles event also at the Ateneo de Naga University.

Blackout

Meanwhile, the media center did not release the current points standings as the strong winds of typhoon Caloy caused a blackout all over the city.

Yesterday’s Region 7 silver medals, on the other hand, were doled out by Gabriel Ortiz and Pagaran in Secondary Boys chess team event, Zoe Menguito of Dumaguete City in Secondary Girls swimming 100-meter butterfly, Loren Dale Echavez of the Sotero Cabahug Forum for Literacy in Consolacion, Cebu, in Secondary Girls 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley, and Alvin Seno in Secondary Boys badminton Singles.

Also doling out silver medals were Jeralin Taboada and Irish Mae Ares in Elementary Girls badminton Doubles the Elementary Mixed Doubles team.

Bronze medals

The Region 7 athletes also had six bronze medals courtesy of UV’s Carlo Ceniza in Secondary Boys Men’s Artistic Gymnastics’ vault event, Naomi Soco in Secondary Girls floor exercise and beam, Michelle Lomotos and Mary Rose Montebon in Secondary Girls badminton Doubles, Nińo Go and Montebon in the Secondary badminton Mixed Doubles and in Elementary Boys badminton Singles.

In the ballgames, Cviraa’s Elementary football team, represented by players of Paref-Springdale team under coach Joselito Bono, was playing the Bicol team at press time and a victory would mean a twice-to-beat edge in the championship for Region 7.
