Local biz group lauds DENR policy stoppage

CAGAYAN de Oro - Local enterprises can now breathe with relief at the suspension of another possible layer of red tape at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

New Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes informed the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation (Oro Chamber) president Ruben Vegafria that the order for all business enterprises to get a mandatory insurance coverage against possible violation of environment laws and regulations has been indefinitely suspended.

Consultations

Last Jan. 25, the Oro Chamber, after meeting with various industry organizations in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, submitted a position paper adopting the full implementation of the Environmental Guarantee Fund (EGF) rather than the promulgation of DENR’s administrative order mandating compulsory environmental insurance coverage (MEIC) for all business enterprise.

Major

The suspension was the first major decision penned by Reyes upon assuming the top post of the environment and natural resources office, Fernando Concepcion, acting DENR director, told the business leader in his letter to the Oro Chamber recently.

The order of Reyes was attached to the letter addressed to the Oro Chamber president.

“We are pleased to inform you that the implementation of DAO-2005-06 MEIC, has been suspended indefinitely through Memorandum Order O1 Series of 2006 dated Feb. 21, 2006. Rest assured that all concerns shall be taken into consideration if ever the same shall be subjected to further study by this office,” it read.

Stringent

The Philippines has some of the most stringent environmental laws passed in recent years.

The laws are so strict that violating companies have been ordered closed by the DENR. b>(Sunnex/press release)
