Civraa looking for funds for medal winners’ incentives

The Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) has no budget for the incentives of medal winners during the recent 2006 Palarong Pambansa in Naga City.

Physical Education on School Sports 7 chief Vivian Giñete told Sun.Star Cebu the giving out of incentives was not mentioned during their meeting with Department of Education 7 officials yesterday.

Giñete said this is because of budgetary constraints.

“We used up all our funds. We gave allowances to the athletes, coaches and sports coordinators and also shouldered the fare of the officials and athletes back to their respective divisions,” Giñete said.

They also spent for the uniforms of the athletes and other expenses prior to the Palaro.

However, Giñete said that they have already sent letters asking for financial help to Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Rep. Antonio Cuenco, the three congressmen of Bohol Province, who promised to give P25,000 each, and Bohol Gov. Erico Aumentado, although no response was received yet.

Giñete said they might ask Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s help.

“We are planning to write a letter to Mayor Osmena to ask for assistance. He may give incentives to the Cebu City athletes,” said Giñete, who also added that the last time Palaro athletes received incentives was three years ago.

Cviraa placed fourth in both the Secondary and Elementary divisions in the weeklong meet. Cviraa garnered 119 points in the Elementary division behind champion NCR (275.6 points), Region 4A/Calabarzon (216.5) and Region 6 (140).

In the Secondary division, NCR also topped the standings with 269.5 points followed by Region 6 (232 points), Region 4-A (226.5) and Region 7 (132).
