Jewelers open series sans Stephen Padilla
The undefeated M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers will start their bid to advance to the Visayas Division Finals of the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association First Conference as they host fourth-seed Toyota-Iloilo Warriors in Game 1 of the best-of-three semifinal series at the Cebu Coliseum today.
A heavy favorite in the series, M. Lhuillier will miss leading-scorer Stephen Padilla, who now plays for Air21 Express in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Vacuum
Padilla, who averaged 14.1 points for the Jewelers, will also leave a huge vacuum in coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba’s three-guard rotation, which has been an asset in all of the Jewelers’ eight wins during the elimination round.
Taking the scoring cudgels for the Jewelers will be swingman Jayford Rodriguez, who normed 13.8 points per game and point-guard Woodrow Enriquez (11.9 ppg) against the Warriors, who reactivated Francis Sanz and Eduardo Allardo.
Mantawi-Toledo
The other series between the Toledo-Cebu Landmasters and the Mantawi Traders was still in progress at press time, while the Game 2 will shift to the Mandaue City Sports Complex tomorrow.
The Jewelers whipped the Iloilo Basketball League-backed Warriors twice in the elimination round – 86-72 last April 2 at the University of San Agustin Gym in Iloilo City and 95-80 last April 18 at the Cebu City Coliseum. (RCM)
