Reyes overhauls 1-10 deficit, beats opponent, 11-1

Taking a 10-1 lead in a race-to-11, alternate-break pool contest against Efren “The Magician” Reyes isn’t a guaranteed win.

American Allen Hopkins found out about it the hard way after bungling a 10-1 lead against Reyes in the second round of the Enjoypool.com 9-Ball Championship in Las Vegas.

Reyes, whose string of impressive wins have gone up since undergoing corrective eye surgery last year, took advantage of Hopkins’ bungle on the eight in the 13th rack to rung up 10 straight racks for the improbable win.

All-Filipino

The 53-year-old Magician, who won the Vietnam leg of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour recently, will next face fellow Filipino cue artist Dennis Orcollo in the third round. Orcollo defeated Tony Crosby, 11-6, and Evan Broxmeyer, 11-7, in the first two rounds.

Two other Filipino cue artists also scored wins in the tournament, which gathered the top pool players all over the world.

Jose “Amang” Parica, Reyes’ contemporary, defeated Nick Varner, 11-8, in the first round and then scalped Luc Salvas, 11-7, in round two to arrange a match-up against Mike Davis.

Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat defeated David Reljik, 11-7, and will play Earl Strickland in the second round.

The champion will receive $20,000, while the runner-up and third placer will get $10,000 and $ 5,500, respectively. (ML)
