Tejada’s condition improves - agent

Eugene Tejada, the Filipino-American forward of the Purefoods Chunkee Giants who suffered a nasty fall Sunday night, was given a ray of hope after it was reported that his condition improved after undergoing surgery Monday on the dislocated parts of his cervical vertebrae.

Tejada suffered a freak accident during Purefoods’ 75-92 loss to Red Bull at the Yñares Center in Antipolo City. The Barakos’ Mick Pennissi accidentally landed on top of Tejada during a scramble for rebound.

Tejada’s manager, Danny Espiritu, said the operation was successful.

“Successful naman ‘yung ginawa kay Eugene. His condition has improved, although he’s still temporary paralyzed. We’re hoping and praying that he’ll get better,” Espiritu said.

Another surgery

The 6-foot-3 Tejada, though, is still scheduled to undergo additional surgery to fuse the unstable neck portions of the spinal cord “within the week when the inflammation of his spine subsides” said earlier reports.

Giants coach Ryan Gregorio, for his part, released statement in the Purefoods website urging all those concerned to keep praying for the recovery of Tejada, who joined Kerby Raymundo, Jun Limpot, Jondan Salvador and guard Noy Castillo on the injured list of Purefoods.

“We have to stay positive in times like this and I hope the fans are there to pray and keep their support,” Gregorio said on the team’s official website.

Tejada, who was born in Daly City, California, will be out indefinitely as his injury is said to be “the latest and by far most serious injury suffered by a player of the Purefoods Chunkee Giants this season.”

He was brought to the Makati Medical Center after the fall, which left him immobile on the hardcourt for around 30 minutes, unable to feel anything from his waist down. (JSV)
