Google adds more jobs in TV, mobile service

NEW YORK - Web search service provider Google Inc. is growing its headcount larger this year than competitor Yahoo Inc., with a focus on international growth, according to a report from a Wall Street analyst.

UBS analyst Benjamin Schachter wrote that Google is adding more jobs than Yahoo, with about 51 percent of its job postings for positions based outside the United States, while 29 percent of Yahoo’s listings were international, up from 15 percent last year.

Google had 1,800 open positions, up from 800 last year; and Yahoo had 800 down from 935 last year, according to Schachter. As of the first quarter, Yahoo had a headcount of 10,098, while Google’s headcount was 6,790.

“While its not surprising that Yahoo’s percentage is less than Google’s (given that Yahoo is more mature and growing at a slower rate), what is surprising is that Google’s total number of postings is 126 percent larger than Yahoos...despite having two-thirds as many current employees. This strongly indicates that Google’s headcount growth will continue to exceed Yahoo’s for the foreseeable future.”

Undeveloped

Of all the open positions, Schachter noted that Google is hiring people in relatively undeveloped areas, such as mobile services, television and as ad agency liaisons. Yahoo notably advertised for positions for video content acquisitions and Web 2.0 developers.

Shares of Google were down $4.67 at $371.53 in afternoon trading last Tuesday, while shares of Yahoo were down six cents at $30.97 on the Nasdaq. (AP)
