IT firms urge SMEs to gain benefits from PC usage, Net

Information technology (IT) companies have urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to computerize their systems and take advantage of the benefits of using the Internet.

During the Cebu-leg of the “How-To Roadshow” at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel last week, PC Magazine editor-in-chief Art Ilano said allowing employees to work using wireless devices, such as computer notebooks, personal digital assistants or Internet cafés will result in an employee’s productivity that is equal to 11 hours.

“That is one of the advantages of the Internet. Instead of the eight-hour day, you get results equal to 11 hours,” he told participants of the roadshow, which was organized by Intel Philippines and PC Magazine.

The nationwide activity was also co-sponsored by Microsoft Philippines.

Private network

To save on the cost of using the Internet, SMEs could just make use of the virtual private network (VPN), which connects a company’s computers to one another, Ilano said.

But he admitted that data may be at risk when running a VPN.

“VPN is a private network built within a public network. Anyone using the Internet can access the data. But there is an answer to this problem—data encryption or the coding scheme,” he said.

Llanto said the power of knowing at real time what is happening in a company’s network offsets the security risk and the investment made to taper off that risk. (JBN)
