Editorials: Time for the mayor to let go

That was a mouthful the Court of Appeals spewed in shooting down Cebu City’s case questioning the city-hood of Talisay.

Mayor Tomas Osmeña, however, has remained defiant, vowing to file a motion for reconsideration even if he still has to consult his lawyer.

But then, in the peculiar setup at the Cebu City Hall, the meaning of the word “consult” may not be what it is when considered in the context of Osmeña’s relationship with his lawyers.

Prerogative

The filing of a motion for reconsideration is Cebu City’s prerogative.

But with the way the Court of Appeals laid down its basis for dismissing the petition makes the use of that prerogative pointless.

Besides, times have changed considerably since Osmeña and former Talisay City mayor Eduardo Gullas, now first district congressman, went toe-to-toe on the ownership of a portion of the South Reclamation Project (SRP).

Note, for example, that the neighbor that Osmeña is quarreling with now is no longer just Talisay but also Mandaue City and its South Reclamation Area.

Fish to fry

One of the popular quips that have come out of the current National Basketball Association playoffs was from Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

When asked about his heated battle on the court with Phoenix Suns’ Raja Bell, Kobe downplayed Bell’s challenge by blurting out: “I have bigger fish to fry.”

Osmeña has indeed bigger fishes to fry than just seeking to nullify Talisay’s city-hood.

Cebu City already has the titles to the SRP and the mayor still has to make good his promise that, with the documents, development in the area will finally speed up.

Then there’s the Asean Summit in December wherein Cebu City plays a big part especially in security preparations.

Not an ego thing

Reacting to the Court of Appeals decision, Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez has been magnanimous, or at least playing the part, by offering again the hand of friendship.

Osmeña, being too proud and obviously suspicious of Mayor Soc and Gullas, may not respond openly to that offer.

But he can keep his peace, let the idea of nullifying Talisay’s city-hood go and attend to other important matters.

He should set aside this ego thing and move on.
