Bata edges out Orcull, advances to fourth round

Efren “Bata” Reyes continued his stellar play in the Enjoypool.com 9-Ball Championship and defeated 2003 Sun.Star Superbalita pool tournament champion Dennis “Surigao” Orcullo to advance to the fourth round at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Reyes, the 1999 World 9-Ball Champion, sent Orcullo to the losers’ bracket after an 11-8 win, to arrange a four-round match up against Andreas Roshowski, who defeated Satoshi Kawabata, also 11-8.

In the second round, Reyes, who had corrective eye surgery last year, showed flawless form as he erased a 1-10 deficit to beat Allen Hopkins, 11-10.

Meanwhile, another Filipino and Reyes’ rival early in his career, Jose “Amang” Parica also advanced to the next round after defeating Mike Davis, 11-10. Parica, who now plays in select tournaments in the US, will next face Johnny Archer, who defeated Po Cheng Kuo, 11-6.

Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat also had mixed fortunes in the second and third rounds of the event after facing two American cue artists.

Luat defeated Earl Strickland, 11-7, but lost by the same scoreline to the young Corey Deuel in the third round.

Deuel will next face Ralf Souquet, while the other fourth-round match-up features Thorsten Hohmann against Charlie Williams.

With his loss, Luat joined Orcullo in the losers’ bracket. Orcullo will meet the winner of the David Reljik and Ernesto Dominguez match, while Luat will play whoever advances from the Marcus Chamat versus Luc Salvas and Fabio Petroni versus DJ McGinley match.

The champion in the event will bring home $20,000, while the runner-up and third-placer will get $10,000 and $5,500, respectively.(ML)
