Chiongbian: The jungolf don
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

HAVE you ever been to Hong Kong?

Well don’t worry about the answer because yes or no, the jungolfers have made Chinatown out of Cebu Country Club and it is now Hong-Wong city. And you can visit that city without paying airport and/or travel tax. You already know about the exploits of Charles Hong and now it is Hannah Wong’s turn to be honored as the CCC girls club champion.

And mirror, mirror on the wall, who is biggest winner of them all? Why of course, he is no other than the never say die, come rain or come shine, jungolf golf diehard, everlasting honorary jungolfer, and the chairman of the CCC jungolf program, Jovi Neri.

Everyone knows how hard he has worked on this program, with the full support of Daddy Julius and Mommy Nelia. Can’t be too certain about it but I’m sure his parents must be wondering when and if Jovi will ever... you know.

Last weekend was Mother’s Day and yet I am still a little hung up on it; especially that Father’s Day is coming up next month.

I have heard this many times before; even from my own children and I hoped it would have gone away by now. A friend told me recently that people in America still think that their holiday is just their own. Holidays are generally about tradition. And there is nothing in the books that says we cannot borrow the idea if it has meaning to us. So the typical question usually is, “Oh, I didn’t know that you have Mother’s Day (Father’s day) in the Philippines.” Of course we do, we have mothers and fathers here too. And, yes, we love to celebrate it like you do!

Since we are entertaining complaints, we might as well take on the subject and bring it to golf. The idea of complaining is to clear up doubts in some peoples mind on what is right to avoid more mistakes.

The most important part about complaining is it prevents the mistake from happening again. So, if you are ever put in a position to answer or clarify valid questions, consider this a privilege and be the medium so it will not happen to other people. On the other end, guys, don’t complain about anything because the next guy will suffer from your inconsideration.

On a lighter subject, why is it that many are content with just playing the same golf course over and over again? Cebu has three courses in the city and three outside yet it’s like a big deal to play another course. Outside from the travel, I believe it is our culture that prevents us from doing this. Why? Because we like to play only with people we know. In fact, I asked Jake Marquez once about the hardest part of being the tournament chairman. His answer was, making the pairings because people have so many requirements that can change any time.

Let me guess that if there was a golf tournament that fits the participants in random flights by means of raffling the names to determine the grouping, I’m sure this tournament will fail for the same reason that no one wants to play with other people. It is too bad because when you play with other people, it forces you to practice proper etiquette. Most violated by golfers that play together is the courtesy of refraining from talking while someone is hitting or putting. Also, allowing the player with the lower score to hit first on the next tee or the player farthest from the hole to hit or putt first.

GOLF TIP: Players who have their hands too far forward at address will end up hitting a low, smothered hook or a big push/slice. The smothered hook because when the hands are forward and the clubface aimed to the target, the club will close at impact and the ball will shoot off low and left.

The push/slice occurs when the hands are forward without clubhead adjustment. On the backswing the hands will make the face open and stay open through impact, causing an open-faced strike. The cure for both is to keep the hands toward the center of the body and the ball three inches inside the left heel on all clubs. Line up the V formed by the left thumb to the center of the ball when the clubhead is in its position behind the ball.
