Coke breaks losing run by dumping Ginebra

Coca-Cola finally ended its long losing streak yesterday as the Tigers dropped sister team Ginebra Kings, 99-88, in the first game of the Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup double header at the Araneta Coliseum.

In the next game, Purefoods survived Talk N’ Text, 72-69.

The Tigers, who have lost their last five games before this one after a fast start, improved its win-loss percentage record to .500 after tying the Alaska Aces (7-7) at fourth spot next to league-leading San Miguel Beer, Purefoods Giants and Red Bull Barakos.

The Tigers, though, kissed goodbye to whatever hopes they had of advancing outright into the semifinals after the San Miguel Beermen bested the former, 92-95, at the Pacoy Ortega Gym in San Fernando, La Union the last time out.

The victory for Coca-Cola, though, is still important as it also halted the two-game roll of Barangay Ginebra Kings, which slid to 6-7.

John Arigo starred for the Tigers’ victory as he spearheaded the decisive rally in the third canto that broke the game wide open.

Arigo finished with 21 markers on top of five assists and a 8-of-9 free-throw shooting clip to be adjudged Best Player of the Game.

The Kings managed to get closer in the homestretch and stayed well within reach at 86-93 with 27.3 seconds to go.

But Ginebra wasted ball possession in the play paving the way for Arigo, Johnny Abarrientos and Dennis Miranda to seal the win for Coke as the trio scored Coke’s last six points. (JSV)
