Greatest band search By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
BANDS. Here’s good news for all local bands and musicians. My very good friend Manny Galicia, who manages Home Radio, FM texted and asked me to invite Cebu’s bands to participate in his station’s project titled Greatest Band Assembly. According to him, the objectives of the project are to help local bands and musicians improve their skills and recognize Cebu as the music capital of the Philippines.

COMMENDABLE. I told Manny that his radio station’s Greatest Band Assembly project is very commendable. In fact, it is a long overdue venture considering that Cebu has a surplus of talents such as composers, singers, musicians, etc. whose music and passion for it have not been given enough exposure and chance to be heard by everybody. If you listen to our AM and FM radio stations, seldom can you hear Cebuano band compositions being played substantially. It’s a pity on the part of local musicians that their work of art have not been given ample exposure on the air for many reasons, one of which is the lack of support from local disc jockeys and station managers. Home Radio FM’s launching of the Greatest Band Assembly comes at an appropriate time when the need to assist local bands and musicians is deemed so necessary.

CAMARADERIE. Manny also stressed that aside from recognizing local bands and making Cebu as the country’s music capital, as it is already, his station’s Greatest Band Assembly also intends to promote camaraderie among local bands and performers. “They can also help in the drive against drug abuse through their music,” the station manager added. I agree with him. While some people perceive band musicians, especially rockers, to be drug users, I would say this is not so. One or two drug dependents among them doesn’t mean all band performers are generally into the vice.

PRIZES. Of course, music also promotes tourism. Manny texted that aside from the tourism aspect of the Greatest Band Assembly, the project also gives the bands a chance to record their compositions with the assistance of the radio station. Yes, the project is acompetition - as in the local bands will be made to perform and big cash prizes are being allotted for the top three winners. The best band will receive P15,000 while the two other winners will get P10,000 and P7,000. The band showdown will be held at the BBQ.comSeafood Restaurant along the Ayala access road at Panagdait, Mabolo on June 17. Interested bands and performers are urged to call Manny’s tel. nos. 253-2973 or 416-1067 for details. Call now while listing is still going on.

MOVIE. I have already seen The Da Vinci Code and I say that the movie is a mere entertainment treat. While some scenes seem to contradict our Roman Catholic beliefs, the film in general does not (try to) demean our religion and faith. As a visual fare, the controversial flick is excellent. Director Ron Howard’s treatment of what I consider as delicate scenes is perfect. It’s a two-and-a-half hour production, so it would have been a boring film if Howard didn’t do his job meticulously. It’s a well-crafted movie.

INSECURE. This stout matron is so insecure with her fitness gym peers. She had been badmouthing them although nobody listens to her anymore. This unano (that’s how some people call her) has an attitude problem because even her village neighbors don’t treat her as one of their own. Her fitness gym peers are happy that she no longer exercises with them. Incidentally, it was her own husband who told her former friends that she had a noselift, something that she had been denying.

RADIOMAN. This dark and stout radioman is a bothered guy. It’s because of a bouncing check lawsuit filed against him. The verdict will soon be out and he himself concedes he will be convicted. Is that so?
