Pope statue rises in Golden Haven

Perched atop the highest peak in the Golden Haven Memorial Park grounds is the country’s first monument, 12 feet tall with a 12-foot pedestal, dedicated to the memory of the most loved Pope John Paul II.

The monument that was recently put in place depicts Pope John Paul II on his first day as Pope greeting the multitudes of devotees assembled at the St. Peter’s Square some 26 years ago.

Golden Haven president Michael G. Regino said: “We want him remembered in his glorious stance in his first ‘Urbi et Orbi’ speech. The late Pope John Paul II’s triumph over death will be best achieved by using this pose.”

Local artist Vic Gulane, an architect, created the edifice.

He is renowned for his historic sculpture of a three-foot wooden image of Pedro Calungsod, which was blessed by the late Pope John Paul II during Pedro Calungsod’s beatification.

Brokers, agents, corporate members and friends held a celebration last April 29 to mark the monument’s completion.

The Pope John Paul II Hill is among the many unique features of Golden Haven Memorial Park, an Italian themed memorial park conceptualized by urban planners SC&A, partners Larry Santos and Lisa Caguingin, TCGI technical consultants, landscape architect Roberto Gopiao, and strategic property consultant Roberto Caballero.

Other monuments at Golden Haven include the Statues of Sts. Peter, James and John.
