Talk back: 'Suroy-Suroy’s’ success By Sam Costanilla Consultant on Media Affairs, Province of Cebu
In her column titled “Suroy” (Sun.Star Cebu, May 23), Nini Cabaero erred in stating that the accolades (about the success of the "Suroy-Suroy Sugbo") have been coming from the organizers and promoters themselves and that the tourists' reactions have not been getting primary play.
I beg to disagree with the columnist on her observation. Gov. Gwen Garcia had to cite the overwhelming success of the local tourism program simply because tri-media practitioners asked for her assessment of the activity.
The governor herself need not speak about the tourism program's successful implementation. Nini can ask Cebu City First Lady Margot Osmeña, columnist Mayen Angbetic-Tan, Fr. Dan de los Angeles, Elena Young and the hundred others who participated in the “Rediscover Camotes” tour as well as previous "Suroy-Suroy Sugbo" outings and they could surely give her an impressive assessment.
Of course, the "Suroy-Suroy Sugbo" has given local tourists themselves the opportunity to view their home in a new light, as Nini wants it to be. She doesn't have to worry because the tourism program has afforded its participants the chance to view their home with a new eagerness. The Cebuanos have learned to truly appreciate more the beauty of their own place---thanks to "Suroy-Suroy Sugbo."
That is the best measurement of the tourism program's success.
By the way, Nini, why don't you join us in the next "Suroy-Suroy Sugbo?" Your honest observation about the activity is part of responsible journalism.
