Seares: Those nuns don’t fly
By Pachico A. Seares
News Sense

Nuns can overwhelm you more than priests do. Ask a colegiala or prep pupil who had a nun for dorm manager, English lit teacher, or play leader.

Not the capacity for brute force, which nuns can't or won't use. It is the appearance of a powerful personality, which can scare or persuade without really trying.

Carmelite nuns have convinced policymakers that a flyover project near their monastery at Juan Luna Ave., Cebu City be put off until next year.

Plans for the project, which nuns have opposed as it might intrude into their privacy, will be restudied.

Possible options: shorten the span by starting past the entrance to the monastery or have an underground tunnel.

How did the nuns get quick response from usually slow bureaucracy?

Letters

I asked Rep. Raul del Mar, project author, why the nuns promptly got attention.

I said the nuns don't march or carry placards. Well, they sing but only during mass. And, for sure, these nuns don't fly, do they?

Raul said, "They send letters all over---perhaps even to God." The congressman, huge devotee of Santo Niño and great admirer of Cardinal Vidal, said that with only a faint trace of humor.

Raul can win elections handily without Carmelite votes but anti-rain prayers during campaign stumps can help.

And, who knows, God may now be chuckling over the nuns' letter.
