USC’s Yap draws game, shares lead
Cebuano top-seed Kim Steven Yap continues to share the lead in his division even as Jessa Balbona suffered her first defeat after four straight wins in the National Age-Group Chess Championships at the St. Francis Square in Mandaluyong City.
Yap settled for a fifth-round draw after four consecutive wins to remain on top in the Boys 18-Under division with 4.5 points.
Yap, top player of the University of San Carlos chess team, shares the lead with second-seed Ivan Gil Biag of Dasmariñas, Cavite, Paulo James Florendo of Zamboanga City, Nephi Manuel, Adrian Perez of Caloocan City and James Bulicatin of Compostela Valley.
Balbona, an incoming high-school sophomore at the University of San Jose-Recoletos, missed a spot in the Girls 14-Under leaderboard after dropping her fifth-round match to Vianca Camille Cañada, who earlier upset Palarong Pambansa champion and National Women’s Juniors eliminations topnotcher Jedara Docena of Bohol in the fourth round.
Cañada outplayed Balbona in a Queen’s Pawn Opening to tally her fifth straight win.
The top 12 in each division will qualify to the round-robin grand finals, which will determine the country’s representatives to the World Age-Group Chess Championships.
Other divisions are Boys 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16-Under and Girls 8, 10, 12, 16 and 18-Under.
