Toledo takes Game 1 over Cebu
Cebu City – Cebu Landmaster-Toledo ended the 10-game winning run of M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Jewelers, 89-83, to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three Visayas Division finals of the ML Kwarta Padala Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association at the Cebu City Coliseum last Wednesday. Toledo can wrap up the series today as it hosts Game 2 of the series in Balamban, Cebu.
Awaiting the winner of the Visayas Division finals is Mindanao Division champion PacMan-GenSan in the best-of-five finals series of the league backed by ML Kwarta Padala, Cokaliong Shipping Lines, Nature’s Spring Drinking Water, Gameface.ph, Molten, Panasonic and Sulpicio Lines.
M. Lhuillier seeks to force Game 3 on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Alex Cainglet scored on a jumper with 40 seconds left to tie the score, 83-all. M. Lhuillier’s Niño Ramirez then drove down the baseline but his lay-up missed. Carlos Sayon grabbed the rebound and fired a pass to Mawi Huelar, who was immediately fouled by Mike Manigo. Huelar made both charities to push Toledo further on top, 87-83, with 14 seconds to go.
Woodrow Enriquez launched an errant triple with the loose ball going to Jayford Rodriguez, but Leo Bat-og came from the blind side to swat away Rodriguez’s attempt. Sayon grabbed the ball and was fouled. He made both free throws for the final count with three seconds to play, leaving the mostly pro-M. Lhuillier crowd shocked.
The Toledo-Cebu game is one of the best played in the tournament. The two teams battled through 14 deadlocks and 12 lead changes.
Cainglet scored five triples en route to 17 points to earn game MVP honors. Sayon followed with 16. Ronald Paraiso made 11 of his 15 points in the final two minutes of the second period.
Enrico Llanto topped M. Lhuillier with 22 points, while Manigo added 12.
