Bfar to put up P3.5M lab

General Santos City—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) last week announced it is putting up finishing touches to a P3.5-million laboratory to boost the chances of tuna and other fishery products entering the European market.

BFAR-Central Mindanao fisherfolk director Buenafe Olarte said they hope to inaugurate the laboratory in time for the arrival of the European Union inspection team in the next few weeks.

“The laboratory equipment is already there and we expect to be fully operational by July,” he told reporters.

Olarte said the laboratory would sample fishery products for safety and hygiene standards before these are disposed to the domestic and international markets.

He noted that in the past years, local tuna producers have been using the laboratory of Dole Philippines Inc. to test their products.

Fund

The fund for the laboratory came from the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority, a state-owned corporation tasked to promote the development of the fishing industry.

Local officials and fishing industry leaders here lauded the establishment of the government laboratory.

“With the establishment of the laboratory here, producers will be saving a lot of money and time in the analysis of fish samples,” said Councilor Lourdes Casabuena.

Marfenio Tan, president of the Socsksargen Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries Inc., said the laboratory would bolster the chances of local tuna products penetrating the lucrative international market. (Sun.Star General Santos)
