Limpag: Sporty phone from Nokia By Max Limpag Celltalk
They're using it for jogging. The digital music player has replaced the analogue Walkman and radio in joggers’ belt clips and arm bands.
And with phones starting to function as music players, many joggers now use mobiles in their daily runs.
Mobile phone giant Nokia has released a phone with what it described as a “sporty design with an athletic lifestyle appeal”—the Nokia 5500
The phone is scheduled to be shipped by the third quarter of this year. It is shock, water, and dust resistant. It also comes with different phone modes and with a push of the button you can access music, phone or sports functions.
The sports mode, according to a company statement, activates the integrated pedometer to monitor the distance walked or calories burnt.
The phone also comes with a text-to-speech program so that you don’t have to stop jogging just to read a text message you’ve just received.
I don’t know how effective this program would be considering most people send messages using SMS shortcuts and smilies.
For those planning to buy phones now, hold off that purchase and read Nokia’s description of the phone’s manufacturing: “For extra durability, the Nokia 5500 Sport features an ergonomic stainless steel casing, complemented by a splash and dust resistant shell and rubber grips. The sleek Nokia 5500 Sport is engineered with materials used in the latest high performance running shoes.”
MUSIC PLAYER. The phone plays a lot of digital music formats: MP3, AMP, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA. It also has RealPlayer support. The phone also comes with an FM stereo radio.
The Nokia 5500 can also play 3GP and MP4 video files. The phone also comes with an integrated two-megapixel camera with up to 4x zoom. The camera has a self-timer and three advanced modes: still, burst, and video.
The phone will be sold at the P21,000 plus range. It comes with a 64 MB built-in memory with a 64MB MicroSD card. But 64MB is a joke considering that the phone is a music player. It is expandable, though, up to 1GB, which is more than enough (for now, at least) for your songs, photos and video files.
