Bolo: Focus more on secondary schools

Public high schools in Cebu need classrooms more than the elementary schools do, according to the Provincial Board (PB) committee on education.

Because of this, PB member Juan Bolo, who heads the committee, will recommend to Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia that she prioritizes high schools in her plan to build 50 two-classroom buildings throughout the province.

“There is not much problem in school buildings with respect to the elementary. Ang problema sa school building ang secondary man,” said Bolo. He said he will inform Garcia about this in the next school board meeting.

Construction

The Provincial School Board, of which Bolo is a member, is chaired by Garcia. The board will meet in the third week of the month.

Capitol is scheduled to bid out next month the construction of the 50 two-classroom buildings.

Bolo said he received reports that in Balud, San Fernando town, high school classes are conducted in makeshift rooms. Bolo also described as inaccurate reports that elementary schools lack classrooms.

“Kanang ingon kuwang sa elementary di na accurate. Naay daghan kaayo eskwelahan sa elementary unya enrolment 20 ra.
Kuwang gyod ang high school,” he said.

To address the problems on the shortage of teachers, Bolo said the school board is subsidizing the salary of 82 teachers.

These hob items, however, are not filled because only very few are qualified among the many applicants.

Bolo said the Department of Education set the standards for the teachers to be hired. He said they will also not hire unqualified applicants just to fill the items because the school board does not want to sacrifice the quality of education.

Classes in public schools began yesterday.

Bolo said everything went smoothly and he has not received reports of any untoward incidents. (MBG)
