Del Mar, Cuenco to fund students affected by pre-need firms’ woes

Cebu City’s congressmen are looking for “poor but deserving” students facing enrolment problems because of the recent financial woes of pre-need companies.

The city’s two congressmen want to finance their schooling for at least a semester after each received P1 million from the Office of the President for the purpose.

With the prevailing tuition in Cebu City schools and universities, however, only one student from every north district barangay will most likely get the assistance.

Rep. Raul Del Mar (Cebu City, north) said that since the allocation is just P1 million, each of the 46 barangays under his district will just get a little over P20,000.

He told barangay chiefs that since they are the ones who must select who among their constituents will enjoy the privilege, they should make sure that those who will be chosen are the most needy and most worthy of the assistance.

Rep. Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City, south) also gave the same advice, saying the barangay captains should ensure that the recipients are only those affected by the crisis experienced by pre-need companies.

Funds for the scholarship will be taken from the president’s Higher Education Development Fund and administered by the Commission on Higher Education (Ched).

In a letter last May 25, the Office of the President said the amount is “for those adversely affected by the financial set back in funding the educational plans issued by the pre-need companies.”

Both congressmen made the announcement in last Saturday’s Association of Barangay Councils general assembly.

The village chiefs promised to immediately check who among their constituents would be picked as beneficiaries as they were not yet sure whether anyone from their barangays were affected by the financial troubles of pre-need companies.

Cuenco said the barangay captains should prioritize those who have no one to turn to with the failure by their pre-need company to shoulder their schooling expenses. (RHM)
