Dela Victoria’s replacement will be tougher, says mayor

Those who dislike Elpidio “Jojo” dela Victoria for enforcing maritime laws will dislike his replacement because he is worse than Jojo, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said yesterday.

The mayor is referring to retired colonel Cesar Enriquez, a staunch political supporter who helped the Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BO-PK) during the campaign in the past two elections.

Enriquez, who is being considered to replace slain Bantay Dagat Commission project director dela Victoria, ran for Apas village chief but lost to Clemente Rosales in 2002.

Osmeña said he does not even see the need to give Enriquez police back-up, “as he is a military man.”

Enforcer

Osmeña said Enriquez is “more of an enforcer than a PR type of person.”

“We have to make it clear that those who did not like Jojo because of his enforcement, the replacement is worse than him,” he told a news conference yesterday.

The mayor is also considering increasing the P1 million cash reward for the arrest of the mastermind in the fatal shooting of dela Victoria last April.

Big time

“With the way things are shaping up, it appears that the person behind the killing of Jojo is big time, so big that they are laughing at my P1 million reward,” he said.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group is trying to pinpoint the mastermind of the killing, which they suspect was related to dela Victoria’s campaign to protect marine resources by running after illegal fishers, manufacturers of illegal blasting caps and smugglers of ammonium nitrate.

“We will not let this be a forgotten issue. What we will do next is consider increasing reward,” the mayor said.

Dela Victoria was shot outside his house in Barangay San Roque, Talisay City last April 12. He died the next day in the hospital.

His alleged gunman, a policeman, has been arrested and is now facing trial. (GAC)
