PB members want to see state of island
Cebu Provincial Board (PB) members will hold an out-of-town session in Malapascua island this month, in response to the Capitol’s takeover of control and authority over the island.
That, as the task force that Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia created to oversee the implementation of development plans for Malapascua will also visit the island on June 13 and 14, when Garcia is expected to make announcements regarding the controversial demolition of some resort structures.
Assessment
PB Member Juan Bolo yesterday raised the need to hold the session in the island so lawmakers can see for themselves the real situation there and respond with appropriate legislation.
Earlier, Garcia visited the place and was surprised to see what she said was deteriorating beauty of the island. She expressed the need to preserve if not restore the island to its former state.
The Municipality of Daanbantayan, which the Department of Environment and Natural Resources ceded its power to, also asked the Province to take over the island because the town does not have enough resources to implement plans.
The different government agencies signed last May 31 an agreement that gives authority to the Province for the island’s administration, management and development.
Valid response
PB Member Joven Mondigo yesterday raised the need to give a valid reason for the board to hold again a session in the island, since it already previously did.
“Other places might complain why we go there for the second time when we have yet to go to other areas, so we must justify,” said Mondigo.
But Vice Gov. Gregorio Sanchez Jr., who presided over the PB session, replied that it is imperative for Provincial officials to go back to the island because it now has a lead role in its administration.
PB Member Agnes Magpale also said the PB might as well go with the task force who will visit there next week.
The board tasked Provincial Secretary Anecita Pasaylo to coordinate with Daanbantayan Mayor Ma. Luisa Loot for the schedule and holding of the session. (JPM)
