Tom to study plan to increase salaries of health workers
Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said he will have to study first the move for Cebu City Hall to subsidize the other half of a proposed increase on the honorarium of day care and barangay health workers.
He said he is against the granting of the standard across-the-board increase because “it’s a very hazy way of making a decision.”
“Money entrusted to me is not Mickey Mouse money but real money. Not because it sounds good we have to do it. It’s my responsibility to see to it that the funds of the City are spent as wisely as possible,” he told a news conference yesterday.
“It doesn’t mean that the barangay health worker who serves five people daily will get the same pay as those who serve 30 people. There are even garbage collectors who get P5,000 a month,” he added.
The mayor, however, assured that he is always willing to help see to it that “the money goes to where it is needed.” But there’s a need for balance, he said.
Rep. Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City, south) has filed a bill raising the P500 average monthly pay of all day care and health workers nationwide to P5,000.
House Bill 5457 is an act increasing the monthly compensation of day care and barangay health workers and providing funds for this and other purposes.
Additional pay
Section 3 of the bill states that day care workers and barangay health workers will receive a monthly compensation of not less than P5,000. Of the amount, half will be paid by the barangay and the remaining 50 percent by the city or municipality.
Day care workers will also be provided additional compensation for services rendered beyond the required working hours, the bill said.
Mayor Osmeña said he was not consulted on the bill.
Day care workers and barangay health workers in Cebu City are currently receiving P2,500 each. The funds are taken from City Hall’s coffers only and none are sourced from the barangays. (GAC)
