Young Cebuana makes good in reality show By Jude Aparri Bacalso Of Sun.Star Cebu
It seems the Cebuano public was taken by surprise by Kimberly Chiu’s come-from-behind victory. This relatively unknown 16-year-old captured the voyeuristic nation’s hearts when she became ABS-CBN’s Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Big Winner in a fairytale finale last Saturday.
She garnered 41.4 percent of the total votes cast.
Even before she was declared the winner, “The Chinese cutie” already had the audience’s vote in Aliw theater in Manila, based on their cheers during commercial breaks.
Kim’s family, including older sisters Lakambini and Twinkle, were present that night, seated at the front row.
Wish
“As a little girl, she wished that she would be seen on TV every day,” revealed Lakam, the elder of the two. Twinkle adds:
“Although she’s the youngest girl, our baby, she always makes the beds. That’s her chore at home.”
The family members distributed mini-tarpaulins with Kim’s photo for the crowd to hold up. Several groups in the audience also came with their own signs, including banners of the budding love team of Kim and second runner-up Gerald Anderson.
Mikee Lee, the brainy Atenean from Quezon City, came in second with just half the number of Kim’s votes. In third place was Gerald Anderson, the half-American heartthrob from General Santos City, followed by Bukidnon’s Clare Cabiguin in fourth place.
The next day, the Big Four appeared on the noontime variety show ASAP and show business gabfest The Buzz where they also answered queries posted online.
Princess
They were then whisked from the ABS-CBN studios to the Aliw theater for The Big Reunion, a special concert featuring all the housemates from the past editions of the Big Brother show. First season winner Nene Tamayo and Danao City native Keanna Reeves from the celebrity edition completed the circle of Big Winners.
At the end of the almost two-hour live finale Saturday, Kim emerged in a fairytale princess white gown from a castle built onstage, lifted by hydraulics to the top of the structure to a cheering audience.
“Kim, keep that genuine laugh that is so infectious,” business unit head of the show, Lauren Dyogi, advises the teen winner right after she was declared the winner.
Together with co-head Linggit Tan, Dyogi is conscious about producing a winner that will become a good role model and a show that will offer a lesson to the viewers.
Kim and her court are scheduled for a much-awaited homecoming here in Cebu on June 16 and 17.
