Speak out: More forceful attitude
By John H. Osmeña

The Church should assume a more forceful attitude towards the series of summary killings in Cebu. The issue has already gone beyond the boundaries of our small community and has now caught international attention.

The casual dismissal of this issue leads one to believe that it has become the “policy” to shoot down thieves, snatchers, pimps and drug addicts. Or those the killers and their sponsors perceive to be thieves, snatchers, pimps or drug addicts.

That may be the mind frame of one who blocks a public road because he hates the mayor of a neighboring city; or ascribes hooliganism allegedly committed by a group of non-government organization workers because he aspires to control some mountain forest; or insinuates graft committed by an established educational institution because he wanted to dip his hand into some foreign money.

Cardinal Vidal is in a position to lead a united front to return sanity to city governance. Congressman Eddie Gullas can take a role more active than just dodging darts flung southward. Members of the business community can join to ensure they do not have to continuously explain to visitors why we are called “murder city.”

Educators and religious leaders can prove they really believe and will stand by firmly behind what they teach.
