San Beda thrashes USJ-R

The visiting San Beda College-Manila Red Lions ended their Cebu Tour on a high note with a 90-72 thrashing of four-time Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.(Cesafi) runner-up University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars last Sunday at the Cebu City Coliseum.

The Jaguars gave the visitors a good fight, controlling majority of the first half but only led, 42-41, at the end of the first two quarters, behind the good play of guard Luther Luke Justianiani and forward Jerry Carilla.

Suddenly, the Red Lions turned up their defense, limiting the Jaguars to only nine markers in the third period. That allowed Cebuano JR Tecson, Borgie Hermida and Kristoffer Taupa to rip the game wide open, as San Beda led, 60-51, entering the final period, .

It was the Red Lions’ fourth straight after losing their first game to the University of Cebu Webmasters, 85-86, last May 31.

The Red Lions then beat the University of San Carlos, reigning Cesafi champions University of the Visayas and Aces in succession.

Samuel Ekwe led the Red Lions with 14 followed by Alex Angeles and Evangelista with 12 apiece. Justiniani paced the Jaguars with 14 followed by Lyndon Gudez with 12.

San Beda (90) – Ekwe 14, Angeles 12, Evangelista 12, Menor 9, Tecson 8, Taupa 8, Canlas 8, Hermida 6, Taganas 6, Galinato 3, Antonio 2, Tirona 2.

San Jose (72) – Justiniani 14, Gudez 12, Ponce 8, Carilla 7, Lozano 7, Gabas 7, Villahermosa 7, Pogoy 4, Arpay 3, Hatague 2, Malinao 1, Pateno 0, Antigua 0, Latosa 0. Quartercores: 19-22, 41-42, 60-51, 90-72.
