BPO firm raises need for courses specializing in Web programming
An official of a firm involved in providing outsourced services for companies in Australia, Europe and the United States urged academic institutions to provide specialized courses on Web programming.
Focus Interactive Out-sourcing chief executive officer Andrei Udal yesterday said there are not many graduates of computer science and related courses, who are highly skilled in PHP Hypertext Protocol (PHP).
In demand
He said these information and communication technology professionals are currently in demand as more and more people take advantage of the Internet and its many functions.
PHP is an open-source programming language used mainly for producing dynamic Web content and server-side applications, Udal said.
“We need them (PHP programmers),” he said, adding that the company is offering a handsome salary package for Web programmers who decide to join the firm.
Udal said the company is also willing to invest in the training of qualified programmers, “provided they have the right attitude.”
Services
Focus Interactive Out-sourcing, whose mother company is based in Australia, offers various services, such as market research, website management and design, and software development.
Udal stressed that the firm, which established operations in Cebu early this year, is mainly involved in online sales acceleration and developing content for mobile media, such as cell phone ring tones, logos and games.
Online sales acceleration, he said, enables client-websites to gain more traffic.
Strengthen
The service and the development of mobile media content, however, are offered by Focus Interactive only to its sister companies in Australia, US, Canada and Europe.
“For now, we focus on setting up and strengthening our organization,” he said, adding that the company will probably consider offering online sales acceleration solutions to non-affiliates after a year.
He said to strengthen its position in the market, the firm needs more Web programmers.
Focus Interactive currently has 37 programmers but Udal said the firm needs to beef up its programming pool to 100 people by the end of the year.
Having come from a call center firm in Manila, Udal said he is aware of the frequent turnover of personnel in the business process outsourcing industry.
Home
“You cannot prevent people from going (to greener pasture). But what we do is to make them (employees) feel they are close to home,” he said.
To “make employees feel at home,” particularly Web programmers, Focus Interactive encourages its staff to bring their family to live with them at the company’s apartment compound in Mandaue City.
The firm has allotted apartments for programmers and their families who were relocated from Mindanao and Luzon. (LAP)
