Group to help seafarers access services, training

The Filipino International Seafarers Solidarity Organization (Fisso) Inc. is an autonomous, mutual help grassroots organization of Filipino seafarers, formally organized in March 2005 after many years of informal support activities.

Fisso’s objective is to provide assistance to Filipino global seafarers and their families, through temporary hostel accommodation, emergency response, information networking on health and legal access, employment referrals, computer skills training and other welfare services.

Membership

It is a non-profit, non political and non-religious organization and it’s not a union. Membership is composed of active seafarers, and former seafarers who desire to provide volunteer services to the organization.

Having existed only for a year, the organization is still in its development stage and is actively seeking assistance for its projects and initiatives to serve seafarer’s welfare.

Membership with the group is lifetime unless revoked for a cause. Seafarers who are active or otherwise but have Seafarers Registration Certificates (seaman’s book) could qualify as members.

Membership fee is at P150 and the annual dues is P50 for the maintenance of memberships. Many members, however, give donations to sustain the organization.

There are over 500 Fisso members nationwide, particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao, and recruitment is ongoing.

Contact

One may log in at www.fisso.org.ph to contact the organization.

Its activities are based mainly in the Pagoda Seafarers’ Hostel in Quiapo, Manila and near several crewing agencies, maritime government offices and the Rizal Park seafarers’ labor market.

This year, Fisso’s officers are Nelson Bacolod (president), Paul Pastera (executive vice president or VP), Eduardo Perez (VP, external affairs), Luis Quiobe (VP, internal affairs).

The secretary general is Ulysses Toling, Ronnel Sumalpong is deputy secretary general, Wendell Lagat is treasurer, Ezra Kinaa-dman is the auditor, Glenn Talucod is the public relations officer and Jessmar Abenion is sergeant-at-arms.
