PUJ driver returns P433T in checks
As part of his reward for returning checks amounting to P433,000, a jeepney driver will have all his traffic rules violations cancelled, the mayor said yesterday.
Ronnie Rudinas, 36, turned over to Cebu City Councilor Augustus Pe Jr. several checks that were left inside his passenger jeepney yesterday morning.
The checks were apparently meant to be deposited to the bank account of the owner of a grocery store near Cebu City Hall since they were attached to three deposit slips. They were placed inside a Manila envelope.
Rudinas said he was having breakfast at an eatery in Mabolo when he noticed the package inside his jeepney.
Instead of plying his usual Mabolo-Osmeña Blvd. route, he decided to go to his house in Banawa to tell his wife about the checks.
“Nakuyawan ko kay kahibaw ko nga makwarta na, na pwede nako pailisan pero dili man ni ako, murag ipangsweldo gyud ni sa tagiya... Kami gyung duha sa akong asawa niingon na iuli gyud ni namo,” he told reporters at the mayor’s office yesterday. (I know that I could have it encashed but this isn’t mine and it looks like it’s meant to pay salaries. My wife and I decided that we should return it.)
Rudinas, a father of two, said he only wants to return something that does not belong to him and he does not expect to get anything in return.
Reward package
But if the mayor offers a reward, he would ask Osmeña to give him consideration on his traffic violations, which he has yet to settle with the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom).
In a news conference yesterday, Osmeña said he is willing to write off all of Rudinas’ traffic violation fines and prepare a reward package for him.
“We’ll get the reward from the owner of the checks or else we won’t give the checks. His traffic fines, we will scratch that out, that’s very easy. But let’s not jump into conclusions, we’ll validate what exactly happened here then well prepare a package for him,” the mayor added.
Osmeña said he is particular about giving incentives to individuals like Rudinas, who he said help make Cebu different from other places.
He recalled giving a taxi driver a brand new car and P50,000 cash reward that were donated by private companies in the early 90s when the driver returned US$15,000, plane tickets and passports that belonged to a tourist.
Values
“When I see people like this who are willing to give up P400,000 and just get an incentive of P5,000, that’s when I am encouraged that there’s hope and this hope will come from ordinary people with strong sense of values. They have to get something substantial because everybody’s watching,” he added.
Yesterday afternoon, Pe said they were just waiting for the owner of the checks to claim them after he was informed that the package was recovered. (LCR)
