Speak out: Social inequality By Jhoann C. Go
Why does social inequality exist when all of us are born with equal rights? Why do some people believe they are superior than others?
Power and money could be one reason. Ethnic diversity is another.
I experienced this so-called ethnic racism once while riding a jeepney from school going home. A group of Badjaos was in the jeepney when I got in.
No one was willing to sit beside them because of their odor. The jeepney driver kept on complaining because some passengers would not ride upon seeing them.
The Badjaos just kept their peace, quietly disembarking upon reaching their destination, not forgetting to pay their fare, which really amazed me considering their lack of resources and the discrimination they encountered.
The call, then, is this: If we want progress and development, let us first develop just and humane characters. Let us unite as one nation while advancing our rights as individuals.
