Pinoys hurdle opening games
Grandmaster Mark Paragua and his Filipino compatriots successfully opened their bid in the 2nd San Mariano International Chess Open at the Kursaal Congress Centre in Republic of San Mariano.
The eight-seeded Paragua, the country’s top player, scored a victory at the expense of Calogero Di-Caro in the first round of the tournament, which has 148 players vying for the 10,000-euro top purse.
Other Filipinos who won their first-round assignments were GM Eugene Torre, newly installed International Master Oliver Dimakiling, National Master Darwin Laylo and NM Rolando Nolte.
Torre, the 26th seed, won with the black pieces over 100th-seed Jea Lamastus-Canda, while the 47th-seeded Dimakiling won with the white pieces over 121st-seed Marco Massironi.
Laylo, the 58th-seed, outplayed Alexei Bottino with the black pieces as the 68th-seed Nolte won with the black pieces over Willem Sparreboom.
The youngest in the Filipino delegation, Fide Master Wesley So, held Ukrainian GM Yuriy Kuzubov to a draw.
The Filipinos recently competed in the 37th World Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy where they finished 44th in a field of 150 countries. (JAF)
