Aces pull off miracle win v. Coke

Alaska pulled off one of the most stunning wins in this conference to draw first blood in its best-of-five quarterfinals series against the Coca-Cola Tigers in the Gran Matador Brandy PBA Philippine Cup.

Behind by as many as 24 points in the second half, the Aces roared back to life in the final canto as they gave Coke a dose of the Tigers’ own medicine in pulling off the stunning 95-94 victory last night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Nic Belasco proved once again that the Aces weren’t wrong in acquiring him from San Miguel as he buried a booming trey as time expired, capping a marvelous comeback effort by the Aces, who trailed the Tigers, 57-77, at the end of the penultimate canto.

Down by two points in the final 10 seconds, the Aces took advantage of Coke’s Johnny Abarrientos’ two bungled free throws as Alaska’s Willie Miller took control of the ball, almost fumbled before making a pass to a waiting Belasco behind the arc that completed Alaska’s amazing comeback.

Belasco, who finished the game with 20 points and seven boards, was adjudged Best Player of the Game. (JSV)
