Mayor writes off P42T in fines of honest driver

Jeepney driver Ronnie Rudinas got his wish after Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña authorized yesterday the cancellation of his traffic violation fines amounting to P42,500.

Rudinas had all his 208 traffic rules violation written off as part of his reward for returning some P433,000 worth of checks to its owner.

Instead of paying P42,500 for all his fines, the mayor asked him to pay the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) a “token amount” of P100 for all his violations since 1996.

His fines were for minor offenses, including the “no smoking” rule inside public utility vehicles, no U-turn, no stopping and defective headlights.

“Wala gyud ko magdahum na mahatagan ko ani sa mayor. Dako gyud akong pasalamat niya kay dako ni og ikatabang namo (I never expected the mayor to grant me this. I’m so grateful to him because this will be of great help to us),” said Rudinas, a father of two.

He also received a cash reward of P5,000 from the owner of the checks, a Chinese businessman who owns a grocery store and a restaurant downtown.

Jeep’s rent

The mayor also gave him P1,000 so he can pay for the rent of his jeep last Tuesday.

Rudinas did not ply his route that day since he went to City Hall to turn over to the mayor a Manila envelope containing several checks amounting to P433,311, which were supposed to be deposited to the bank account of the grocery owner.

Rudinas’ wife also shared his blessings after the mayor offered her a job at City Hall.

Councilor Augustus Pe JR., who received the checks from Rudinas, said he does not know yet what job Rudinas’ wife will get.

“Wala man koy nahuman, kutob ra intawn kog high school mao na dawaton lang nako bisag unsay ihatag sa mayor (I don’t have a degree, since I only reached high school, which is why I’ll accept whatever the mayor offers),” his wife said in a phone interview. (LCR)
