CHICAGO – Through this allotted space, as previously promised, I will start entertaining the tons of e-mails that had lodged at my Inbox since the outset of the ’06 playoffs. Here we go:
1) Ervin Joren (ervzj@yahoo.com): “Both NBA finalists are neophytes. Does coaching matter in this series?” Oh, yes. Although Avery Johnson of the Mavs is an excellent coach, Pat Riley of Miami has 20 years more of coaching experience. Not by much, but the Heat have the coaching edge in this showdown.
2) Krizzy Hyll Retuya (krizhil05@yahoo.com): “Will you cover the ’06 NBA Finals?” With great pride and joy, yes, I will. The NBA confirmed my credentials last week. All games, all access. Not bad for a provinciano, eh?
) Joey Dala (joeydala@yahoo.com): A software engineer now working in Japan, Joey wonders, “with the NBA Finals around the corner, you’re gonna be busy as a bee, right?” Yep. But I’m looking forward to it. While on-site at the Finals, I will whip the usual trifecta daily – a column, the NBA Grapevine and the NBA Diary.
4) Khail Pableo (khail_bb@yahoo.com): After Miami beat Detroit, Khail asked: “Are the NBA refs possibly mafia?” No, no, no. The NBA refs are the best in the world, loyal only to fairness, not to some imagined conspiracy.
5) Jade Sanchez (hrstaff_cimascents@yahoo.com): “Who’s better, LeBron or Dwyane?” It’s a very subjective question, and therefore, hard to answer. So let me just put it this way: Right now, Dwyane is in the Finals, while LeBron is at home.
ERRATUM. In a previous column, I wrote that Shaq is making his seventh trip to the NBA Finals. I was so wrong, what an idiot I sometimes am. Shaq is only in his sixth Finals because his previous team, the Orlando Magic, went to the big dance just once, not twice as I insisted.
Thanks to John Paul Manlergo (masternog2@hotmail.com) and Franklin Yee (frankmeister_v01@yahoo.com) for the rectification.
Finally, my good pal Rey Seno of New York has this metaphorically funny take on Detroit’s coaching woes which helped lead to the Pistons’ playoffs demise: “Actually, nyor, gi-angkon lang to ni Flip Saunders nga siya ang nagluto sa humba (Flip Saunders said he cooked the humba). Pero it turned out that it was Larry Brown’s leftovers. Gisige niya og init, unya pagka hurot, di diay kama-o moluto ang tonto (He kept on heating it but the fool can’t cook).” Got something in mind?
