Casino Español back on sports track, to stage Copa de Golf

After completing its P300 million facelift, the Casino Español de Cebu is set to re-launch one of its more successful tournaments – the 6th Copa de Golf – on June 30 at the Cebu Country Club.

“The tournament started in 1998 when 30 guys went to Dumaguete for a tournament,” said tournament director Nonoy Tirol at the press conference at the Casino Español de Cebu.

“We are re-launching our new clubhouse and we are also re-launching our previous tournaments,” Tirol said.

From an initial group of 30, organizers are expecting more than 200 players from 50 groups of four-player teams.

“This is a very friendly tournament,” said Sun.Star Cebu golf columnist Ed Chiongbian, the tournament’s press relations officer.

“Having the four-man format yields to wholesome fun for everybody.”
Organizers are also preparing a party during the awarding ceremonies at the clubhouse.

“This (awarding) will be an event within an event,” Chiongbian said.

Organizers require teams to use corporate names for media mileage and will also allow them two lady players per team.
There will also be no divisions and they will use the Stableford scoring system.

A Kia car will be given to anyone who can score an ace in any of the par-3 holes, while there is a plan to hand out a motorcycle for an eagle.

If no one scores an eagle, they plan to raffle off the motorcycle.

The newly refurbished Casino Español also plans to stage billiards, tennis, bowling and badminton tournaments.

“We are inviting companies to have their sportsfests here,” said sports director Nonoy Alba.
