Chiongbian: A yearlong golf festival
By Edgar R. Chiongbian

The first of a series of 12 monthly-medal tournaments sponsored by Bank of Cebu went underway last Saturday at Cebu Country Club. This is a very special and unique episode in the history of golf in Cebu. There was never a business or company that committed to sponsoring a golf event for one whole year.

We congratulate Bank of Cebu for this huge step forward and for taking the lead. We know that the CCC club members are very happy and appreciative of this and I’m sure they can’t thank you enough for your support. All other clubs should not despair because the door has now been opened and others will follow to benefit all the club members and golf clubs in Cebu.

Given the opportunity, I talked to Bank of Cebu president Ephraim Salcedo and operations chief Leo Solano during the awarding dinner. I couldn’t help but ask them about the future of these tournaments. And taking heed from the quote that says, “Don’t ask me the reason why,” I decided to ask the balance of the quote that says: “Ours is but to do or die.”

Mr. Salcedo expressed that he has big plans for future tournaments that will include increasing the value of the prizes. Under consideration is to add a high-end brand car in the free raffle, maybe within six months. Another plan on the drawing board is to send to Manila the winners of a specific monthly medal tournament and have them compete there, or the reverse, wherein the finals will be in Cebu.

The winners of the CCC monthly medal: Class-A champion Jufil Sato (net 66), William Hong (net 66) runner-up; Class-B champion Pete Polo (net 66), Peter Yang (net 66) runner-up; Class-C champion Alex Pimentel (net 66), Jude Cimafranca (net 67) runner-up; Class-D champion Harry Campbell (net 73), Shigekazu Sakunaga (net 73) runner-up; Seniors champion Edgar Chiongbian (net 67), Ramon Escario (net 70) runner-up; Guest champion Charles Tiu, Richard Hong runner-up.

The 6th Copa de Golf organizers held a press conference last Tuesday. Based on the information given, all systems are go for the June 30 golf tournament. All their sponsors have confirmed their support and Copa chairman Nonoy Tirol and Casino Español sports director Nonoy Alba are very excited about the upcoming tournament, anticipating a very big turnout. Lots of giveaways, a car for a hole-in-one, two round-trip tickets Cebu-Manila-Cebu from major sponsor Philippine Airlines and other surprises to be revealed at a later date.

Casino Español VP Gabby Leyson did his part well by welcoming and introducing the media to the club, and using up all his knowledge about golf. We all know he can’t play golf but is not that bad with the lingo but still won’t give up with the idea of building a mini golf in his upland country. Which brought back the topic of the Broke Back Mountain movie. He said that these guys were not really gay; they just got involved in a close relationship because there were no women around. So I asked if they noticed these guys kissing and the reply was, oh yeah that! Least you be confused, they were not exactly in prison you know!

GOLF TIP: If you are having trouble with your putting, try the Jack Nicklaus method. At address, focus directly over the target line and be conscious that the back of your left hand is facing the hole. When swinging the putterhead back, the right hand should be doing all the work and the left hand serving only as a guide.

Make your hands work in much the same way on the forward stroke; the right doing most of the hitting while the left keeping the clubhead on line. It is very important that your left hand continue to guide through impact. If it stops too soon, the putt will be misdirected. The main idea of the stroke is to have fluidity between the hands and the putterhead. Try to sustain a constant pace and tempo, using the length of the backswing to match the force of the stroke and length of the putt.
