Jewelers win game 1 By Rommel C. Manlosa Sun.Star Staff Reporter
TheM. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City matched PacMan GenSan’s run-and-gun game to win Game 1 of the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association best-of-five finals series, 101-91, Tuesday nightat the Cebu Coliseum.
Game 2 was being played at the Cebu Coliseum at press time. The series shifts to Gen. Santos City on Sunday for Game 3.
It was not all sweet for the Visayas Division champion Jewelers as they had to climb out of a 16-point deficit during the second quarter, coming up with defensive stops to gain control of the game.
3-point accuracy
“With its 80-percent accuracy from the 3-point area, this team is very dangerous. We were outplayed, which was why we needed to come up with a different strategy, including matching up with their energy and run-and-gun game,” said M. Lhuillier coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.
After erecting a 43-27 lead with 7:28 left to play in the second period, the Mindanao Division champion’s lead vanished faster than you can say Manny Pacquiao.
The Jewelers dropped a 14-0 bomb with shooter Niño Ramirez exploding for nine points that put the Jewelers within 47-53 at the halftime.
With the momentum slowly shifting, M. Lhuillier relied on ace guard Woodrow Enriquez’s backcourt savvy.
“When our outside shots started to fall, I told the boys that we need to keep our energy level high because PacMan was already slowing down,” Alcoseba said.
After Jayford Rodriguez sank a twinner for a 65-64 lead, PacMan was done for good.
Mike Manigo, who was named Best Player of the Game, waxed hot, nailing back-to-back triples to give M. Lhuillier its biggest lead, 82-68, 8:13 left in the game.
