The yellow gallery called I
By Ritchie Landis Doner Quijano

Finally it’s here, an artist-friendly gallery has come into realization. As its business name will suggest, i gallery stands for many things. It could mean art that is intellectual, intuitive, instinctive, instantaneous, interesting, international and what have you.

Owned and managed by local painters Celso Pepito and Sonia Yrastorza, their partnership aims to have an art gallery that is by, for and of artists.

An art gallery such as this has been badly needed for a very long time. Thus the i gallery is a welcome addition to the cultural life and infrastructure in the city. Both owners who alternate in giving art lessons have just concluded their summer art workshops with impressive results in the quality of their student’s paintings.

Their teaching schedule continues all-year round; classes are held at the gallery’s airconditioned room. Apart from art classes and the business of marketing paintings and sculptures, the gallery deals as well in antiques. They specialize in oriental porcelain, stoneware jars and pottery. Sonia is in charge of this, having been an antiques dealer on the side for several years with Inver Treasure House.

When it comes to art, they have a well-rounded collection. This positive catholicity is a sign of their non-discriminatory stand to any particular style and expression. At their inaugural show Ripples, a total of 26 artists were in participation, with guests outnumbering the exhibiting artists. The place offers a wide selection of different persuasions from conservative realism to abstract works filling the walls of the gallery’s two main exhibition rooms.

Also at the opening, guests were entertained with a live performance of a classical piece by Taiwanese Fanny Chen on violin. Easy to spot, the bright-yellow hued house-turned-gallery is situated along Banilad Road (between Darra’s + Bowler and RD Pawnshop).
