Talk back: Complaint on bonus
By Sam Costanilla
Consultant on Media Affairs
Province of Cebu

In the SpeakOut section of this daily a few days back, there was an open letter sent by a writer who requested for anonymity.

The writer, who admitted he/she is a Capitol employee, assailed Gov. Gwen Garcia for "ignoring customs and tradition" as far as the Capitol workers' productivity bonus is concerned.

I must remind the writer that under Governor Garcia's leadership, Capitol workers shall only be given their productivity bonus and other monetary benefits based on performance---not on customs and tradition.

The writer should also be reminded that the governor is not intentionally withholding the Capitol workers' productivity bonus.

A special body tasked to formulate a system on the granting of such monetary benefit is still working on the matter because it is really unfair if all workers are granted such bonus even if some of them do not work satisfactorily.

No, it is not mandatory to grant the bonus every January as the writer erroneously stated.

It is the chief executive's prerogative when to grant it, not necessarily every first month of the year.

I advise the complaining writer to concentrate on his/her job first before asking for his/her bonus.

Other Capitol employees who I know are performing well are not complaining about it.
