IM Bitoon looking for a way to join Ozamiz chessfest
International Master Richard Bitoon is expected to add luster to the 1st Ozamiz City National Chess Tournament on July 1-3 at the Congressman Hilarion Ramiro Jr. Gymnasium in Ozamiz City.
However, the Cebuano IM said his participation to the nine-round Swiss system tournament, which offers a top prize of P30,000, still hangs in the balance.
“I am facing a dilemma right now whether to join or not,” Bitoon told Sun.Star Cebu. “I really love to join but I have to look for funding and I can’t just leave the kids.”
Bitoon, who led Mandaue City to a titular finish in the 1st Mayor Antonio Canoy Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Tournament last month, is teaching and officiating chess tournaments for young players in Manila, where is currently based, aside from his work in the Philippine Navy.
Attractive prizes
The Navy man said he will announce his participation next week after the kiddies and juniors events he is conducting.
Meanwhile, Ozamiz City Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. made sure that aside from the major awards, prizes will also be give to the top kiddies, juniors, seniors and executives in the tournament.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Region 10 coordinator Rey Urbiztondo said attractive cash prizes also await top category players aside from the top 10 finishers of the NCFP-sanctioned tournament.
Asia’s first grandmaster, Eugenio Torre, has announced his participation in the national open, which also expects members of the RP Olympiad team.
Urbiztondo, who is also the tournament director, has coordinated with NCFP president Prospero Pichay Jr. for the RP Team members’ participation in the tournament, which offers around P70,000 in total cash prizes.
One of the expected participants is Cebuano Kim Steven Yap, who will be gunning for a national master norm. (JAF)
